A woman who won the love of a king and ascended to royalty by virtue of her beauty, Elizabeth fought tenaciously for the success of her family -- her daughter who would one day unite the warring dynasties, and her two sons whose eventual fate has confounded historians for centuries: the Princes in the Tower. An active player in the power struggles that surrounded her, she made hard and courageous choices, always trying to protect those whom she loved. Informed by impeccable research and framed by her inimitable storytelling skills, Philippa Gregory gives an unforgettable voice to an extraordinary woman at the heart of a devastating conflict.
My Review
What a beautiful, beautiful book. The heroine of this wonderful novel is Elizabeth Woodville, a young widow with two small boys. Destitute after her husband's death, she waits to plead her case to the new king, Edward IV. The moment their eyes met, Elizabeth knew that life would never be the same again.
I have always been somewhat fascinated by the War of the Roses, but sadly, as is so often the case, the history focuses on the man and not the woman. But in this book, it is Elizabeth Woodville who takes centre stage. We share n her hopes, her fears, and her passionate love for a man who defied duty to marry her. I loved every minute of this book. I read it way into the night, I even got up early the next morning, so I could finish it before I went to work!
This is the first book that I have read by Philippa Gregory, but it will certainly not be the last.
