Love Lost in Time
By Cathie Dunn

A reluctant daughter. A dutiful wife. A mystery of the ages.
Languedoc, France, 2018
Historian Madeleine Winters would rather research her next project than rehash the strained relationship she had with her late mother. However, to claim her inheritance, she reluctantly agrees to stay the one year required in her late mother’s French home and begins renovations. But when she’s haunted by a female voice inside the house and tremors emanating from beneath her kitchen floorboards, she’s shocked to discover ancient human bones.
The Mediterranean coast, AD 777
Seventeen-year-old Nanthild is wise enough to know her place. Hiding her Pagan wisdom and dutifully accepting her political marriage, she’s surprised when she falls for her Christian husband, the Count of Carcassonne. But she struggles to keep her forbidden religious beliefs and her healing skills secret while her spouse goes off to fight in a terrible, bloody war.
As Maddie settles into her rustic village life, she becomes obsessed with unraveling the mysterious history buried in her new home. And when Nanthild is caught in the snare of an envious man, she’s terrified she’ll never embrace her beloved again.
Can two women torn apart by centuries help each other finally find peace?

An interview with Cathie Dunn.
What inspired you to start writing?
I always loved reading, and escaping into a great story. Even as a child, I tried to get into the head of the protagonist, and replay the plot. Famous Five was high on my list.
When I was around 13, I started to write simple short stories. Even then, I was a fan of gothic historical fiction / romance, which still influences my writing at times.
For me, it always comes back to two things – history and location. It’s such an inspiring combination. Those are the starting points of all my novels. The rest works itself out, usually. Or not!!
What was the hardest part about writing this book?
It’s Nanthild’s story and fate that moved me the most. Plotting her path, knowing from the beginning where it would lead, was tough. Whilst I was writing the book, she turned into such a cherished character, that it made me really upset in the end. It was a hugely emotional journey.
Does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?
That’s definitely Nanthild. She is brave and daring, loyal and kind. Although very much a woman of her time, she also has her own secrets and follows her calling. This is what gets her into trouble. However, she settles into her new home well, and the way she quickly learns to run her husband’s fortress still amazes me. And the way she faces a bully is remarkable. In my mind, she’s a true early medieval heroine.
What do you hope your readers take away from this book?
I hope readers will enjoy both Maddie’s and Nanthild’s stories, and discover a beautiful, historic area here in the south of France at the same time. History nuts will have plenty of regional events and castles to check out, and those looking for romance will find plenty of it here, too.
But ultimately, it’s about two young women, divided through time, who are searching for their path in life, and finding it in different ways. Maddie in the present, and Nanthild in the past.
It’s important that we should remember women in history. Nanthild was a real woman, although her name and origin were lost in the mists of time. We know her husband’s and their son’s names through historic records, but not hers.
So now, she has a name. She is Nanthild, the first Countess of Carcassonne. And readers will remember her…
